You know how when the TV news reporter goes around the neighborhood where a criminal lives and they interview the neighbors? What do they always say? “I would have never suspected. It was always very quiet at their house. I hardly ever see them” or something to that effect.

The question is though, if it’s not the quiet neighbors you hardly ever see, and don’t really know too well, are not the ones you would suspect, who would you suspect? The neighbor who’s inviting you over for pool parties and barbeques?

RIP Zune:

Microsoft came too late to the party and their interface lacked the slickness of iTunes. Too bad. Not that I’m any great fan of Microsoft or the Zune, but I am not really a fan of the iPod. It does not have great audio quality, you have to use it with iTunes and the battery is not user replaceable. I like a player that can act as a USB drive and doesn’t require any special software.

Amy Chua’s book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom” has created a lot of press and tons of discussion about parenting. I can understand how a parent raised in a totalitairan state, that places extreme emphasis on passing a college entrance exam, as it is the only way to higher education in China, can come to believe that utmost discipline is necessary to properly raise an child.

But in the United States, we have a different approach. It’s true that many of our children will never pass a class in differential equations or play piano at Carnegie Hall, but this country was made great by a varied population, people many different talents. There are many ways to acheive success in this country and each child should be allowed to find his or her special talents and voice.

What would music sound like if everyone only played piano and violin?

Here is a list of successful college (and high school) drop outs:

Bill Gates
Larry Ellison
Sheldon Adelson
Kirk Kirkorian
Michael Dell
Paul Allen
David Geffen
Steve Jobs
Richard Branson
Ralph Lauren

The list goes on…

Sure, if the most important thing in life is to get into the state run university, then maybe a rigid approach to parenting and education is what’s best. But in this country we celebrate the underdog and encourage free thinking.

I’m not saying that we don’t need to take a good long look at how we’re raising our kids. Children today do seem to be more spoiled, less respectful of parents, teachers and authority figures, and are many times undisciplined both in behavior and work ethic. This may be Ms. Chua’s biggest contribution with her book. However, not only does her approach seem impratical (especially with a family larger than one or two children) but goes against the very principles of this country.

Isn’t the pursuit of happiness one of our inalienable rights?
